Who's been to a military ball?
Jun. 10th, 2009 | 04:33 pm
So I just agreed to accompany a good friend of mine to a military ball. Except I am so, so not the ball type. Thank goodness I have three months to prepare.
Can any of you flisties help me out on what to expect (
alliecat8 , I'm looking at you!)? My friend is in the Air Force (reserves, I think) and he works on base. All he told me was the everyone will be dressed to the nines in their military finest and it is an extremely formal occasion. I assume this means a long dress/gown for me... and definitely a refresher in formal etiquette. :-)

spn_hurtcomfort H/C meme.
Prompt: Dean, Sam, post 4.16. Dean’s in the hospital and not getting better as fast as he should be due to medical complications/a way overdue emotional breakdown/whatever, and Sam is kind of scarily protective of him and intimidates all the staff/pretty angels! Apr. 23rd, 2009 | 09:02 am

As you know, I have a special spot in my heart for H/C fic, so I was pleased as punch to stumble across the SPN H/C meme! If you like H/C at all, you should check it out - there's a bunch of great fics there, like the awesome one
And I wrote a couple as well - what can I say, I couldn't resist - which I'm going to post to my journal.

sometimes these eyes forget the face they're peering from
Apr. 17th, 2009 | 09:31 pm
hello flist! i've been peeking in on you every once in a while, but i haven't had much to post about as of late - i'm kind of ambivalent about most things in my life these days. still no interviews for a "real job" and the waitress job is really hard work (the other waitress wears a pedometer - we average 3.5 miles per shift!) for not a lot of money, but as my grandfather used to say, 'half a loaf of bread is better than none'. i've picked up a couple of extra shifts here and there and i'm doing a catering job tomorrow, for which i'm futilely trying to tie a necktie. why put chicks in neckties anyway? seems silly to me.
i had a wild night out last night, in which i learned the following helpful things:
i saw 'observe and report', and i continue to *heart* seth rogen. i also saw 'hannah montana' (with the katie monster, of course) and it was predictable, but cute for the kids. oh, and i have the first disc of the first season 'flight of the conchords' - very cute! even if it makes me miss new zealand and those friendly kiwis. :-)
i had a wild night out last night, in which i learned the following helpful things:
- i *heart* men who kiss my neck. and so many miss the boat here - simple and sexy. public service announcement to the menfolk out there - kiss her neck.
- and a PSA to me - susie, when you're done drinking beer for the night, it's not a great idea to switch to captain morgan's because it's so "refreshing". also, it's awkward to come home as your mother is leaving for work - try to avoid that in the future.

A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness
Dec. 26th, 2008 | 12:07 pm
Chabad orphan lights Hanukkah candle:
'The father of Rivkah Holtzberg, who was killed along with her husband Gavriel during the terror attack on the Chabad house in Mumbai, India last month, held a menorah-lighting ceremony at his Afula home Sunday evening. Moshe Holtzberg, the murdered couple's 2-year-old son, lit the first Hanukkah candle.'
And this is kind of amazing:
'The verse in the Torah that was shot through by Mumbai terrorists reads: “The Al-mighty spoke to Moshe after the death of Aharon’s two sons….” It is from Vayikra, Chapter 16, Verse 1. The damaged Torah scroll was discovered when officials examined the Chabad House following the massacre of six Israelis by the Muslim terrorists who staged the mass slaughter in at least 10 different places Wednesday night. They saw bullet holes in the Holy Ark where the scroll was kept and then examined it to see if it had been damaged. The verse refers to Nadav and Avihu, the sons of the High Priest Aaron who died when they performed an offering that was not commanded by the Almighty. The Torah states that the Almighty said, “I will be sanctified through those who are close to me,” a statement that often is quoted following inexplicable deaths.'
As Rivka's father says, "A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness."

According to Explosions in the Sky, "The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place"
Dec. 4th, 2008 | 11:35 am
...but I'm finding all sorts of evidence to the contrary.
We watched the Mumbai terror attacks unfold on our last night in Prague, on the only English-speaking channel (CNN) on TV. First reported 11 people dead, then 18, and when I saw the fires, I shook my head and told Kelly they'll be triple digits, at least. We watched them bring out Hemant Karkare's body over and over again, on a sick loop. We finally turned it off and tried to sleep.
It was like a morbid play we kept checking in on over the next two days - I was at Kelly's checking email when I read they had attacked Nariman House. And I just felt such sorrow when I heard they had killed the Rabbi and his (six months pregnant) wife along with the others - not only killed, but tortured - and beaten their two-year old little boy. Their little boy who probably watched it all happen, but was lucky enough to have been rescued, only to be crying out for his mom and dad.
It doesn't seem to be of much interest back home - many people I bring up the subject to have only a peripheral awareness of the events - and that saddens me even more.
All I can think is that the world is indeed a cold, dead place.

your friendly voting reminder
Nov. 4th, 2008 | 08:08 am
hey all! i've been away for a bit - RL (namely work and the election) have demanded front burner status as of late.
but i wanted to stop in today to remind everyone to vote - best case, you can tell everyone how you helped your candidate win. worst case, you've earned the right to complain. ;-)
expect long lines - i went at 6:30 when the polls opened and it took me an hour to vote. but as someone said to me yesterday, you'll stand in line for an hour to ride a roller coaster, why not to vote?
i miss you guys and hope you're all doing well!
ETA: even better reason to vote - free coffee at starbucks!

SPN Gen Rec - "Lazarus Rising"
Sep. 23rd, 2008 | 11:13 pm
"Lazarus Rising" by
oselle .
I came across this story and quite simply, I am in love. She started it back in June, so no spoilers for the current season, although some similarities (Kripked? I don't know the lingo!). Dean comes back from actual Hell to find Hell on earth - desolation, martial law, and a world that is very different from the one he left four years before. And just where is Sam?
The pacing, descriptions, and characterizations are just so rich and lyrical - it's like settling down with a good novel you don't want to put down. Currently a WIP, six of eight chapters are posted. I was lucky enough to stumble upon it, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
